Maidstone Museum
Maidstone Museum is set for an exciting transformation after being awarded £75,000 from the UK Government’s Museum Renewal Fund, administered by Arts Council England. The funding will help the museum bring Japanese heritage to life through The Tōkaidō Way – a captivating new exhibition inspired by the ancient route that once linked Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto. Visitors can expect a visually stunning journey through Edo-period Japan, celebrating art, culture and travel with rare pieces from Maidstone’s world-class Japanese collection.
The grant will also fund a brand-new digital platform, opening up the museum’s collection to audiences across the globe. Soon, anyone from Maidstone to Melbourne will be able to explore its artefacts online, giving researchers and history lovers access like never before.
In addition, the money will support research into a potential future exhibition celebrating Maidstone-born artist William Alexander, famed for his depictions of 18th-century China. The museum’s charming Withdrawing Room will also see further upgrades, making it a vibrant venue for community and evening events.
Councillor Stephen Thompson said the funding marks “a transformative moment” for Maidstone Museum, helping it preserve the past while embracing the future – connecting local heritage with global audiences in fresh and inspiring ways.
