Maidstone Council Updates

Maidstone councillors are calling on the Government to recognise the Len Valley and Greensand Ridge as official National Landscapes - giving them the same protection as the Kent Downs. Councillor Tony Harwood has written to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds urging DEFRA to open early bids for landscape extensions, highlighting how these stunning areas are vital for nature, wildlife, and climate resilience.

The Len Valley, between Lenham and Bearsted, is rich with meadows, streams, and wildlife, while the Greensand Ridge, stretching from Boughton Malherbe to Nettlestead, is home to ancient woodlands and rare parkland. Both are currently only locally protected, leaving them vulnerable to development and climate threats.

If approved, the proposal would safeguard over 50 square kilometres of countryside, helping the UK meet its goal of protecting 30% of land for nature by 2030 and ensuring these beautiful Kent landscapes remain thriving, resilient, and accessible for future generations.
